I'm not a fan of speech balloons, but I like some of your ideas.

It looks like a really good series with plenty of interesting ideas. I haven't seen earlier episodes so it was a bit hard to know exactly what was happening here. However what I saw looked great.
One tip I'd offer for future animations that use speech balloons is not to let your characters walk away from the speech balloons - just because it looks a little strange. It's kind of like you can hear voices but the speaker has gone! Either have the character speak then move or even, move the speech balloon with the character - which is now possible. It'll just look better.
